NSFAS Confirms New Requirements and Allowances for 2025

“NSFAS has Announced  Updated Requirements and Allowances for 2025.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), announced two major changes to the NSFAS 2023 Eligibility Criteria and Conditions for Financial Aid as a way to ensure that students have enough funds for academic purposes.

NSFAS is a South African student financial aid scheme funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). The organisation provides NSFAS bursaries to students who are unable to afford the cost of their tertiary education themselves. However, the scheme has come under scrutiny regarding the recent accommodation price cap.

The amendments agreed upon include:

  • A pass rate of 50% is the academic criteria requirement for university students for the 2023 academic year.
  • Living allowances to be increased from R15 750 (including personal care – R3 045) to R16 500 (including personal care – R3 045).
